Online Game Design Degree
Like me, if you are a member of Generation Y, or the MTV Generation, or whatever you’d like to call it, there’s a good chance you have played at least one video or computer game in your life. Gaming technology has come a long way from games like Pong. Images are more realistic and 3-D, sounds and game play are more exciting and the game storylines leave little room for boredom. I don’t mean to bash the classic games at all, but I think becoming a game designer now is certainly more exciting than it was maybe 20 years ago.
So how does one become a game designer or game developer? Well, earning an online game design degree would be the first logical step. There are many types of online game design degrees to choose from, and it really depends on what aspect of game development strikes your fancy.
If you enjoy the actual artistic side of game design, consider majoring in Game Art & Animation. This particular game development degree program focuses on character design, 3-d and 2-d animation, and the graphic portion of a game.
If you are more interested in the actual story line or plot development, consider a game development degree in game design. If you’re like me and are more of a technical and “behind the scenes” type person, game programming will allow you to dive headfirst into the actual construction of the game, and really lets you get your hands dirty!
Once you have decided on a major, you can see what career paths may lay ahead. There are several types of jobs that can be offered to those with an online game design degree. You can be a game programmer, game designer, a level designer (actually placing structures that will create the game world), game producer or part of the production personnel. You can also work in game audio, game support, or be a game writer.
There are many different jobs associated with the creation of any game. Next time you play either a computer or video game, take a look at the credits. I think you’ll find that once you begin your journey in earning an online game design degree, you may have a greater appreciation for all of the hard work and effort that each of those people has contributed.
Designing and developing a game isn’t as easy as it may seem, but earning an online game design degree will help you get on your way to becoming one of the people who brings those games to life.
